How to Get the Alone Time You Need With Your Spouse After Becoming Parents

One thing I didn’t want to suffer on this journey of becoming a mom was my marriage. I have seen so many examples where all the focus goes on the baby's needs that the parents neglect each other.

In the beginning, it can be difficult because everyone is sleep-deprived. The best part of marriage might be getting 4 hours of uninterrupted sleep together.

But what happens when that isn't enough? You all deserve more from each other.

It took a trip to Jamaica for a wedding for my husband and me to get our groove back. That trip showed us that it is okay to take time for us when our baby is safe with someone in our village.

Here are three tips to reconnect with your partner post-baby.

Use naps and bedtime to your advantage.

  • The household chores can wait. When your baby is napping or sleeping at night, use that time to connect with your spouse. You can order takeout, watch a movie, have sex, or talk. Even if you can only spare 15 minutes, having time to yourselves each day is important.

Hire a nanny or schedule time for the baby to stay with a trusted family member.

  • I understand that everyone doesn't have the luxury to pay for a nanny or have family near. However, if this is an option for you, use it! We have had so much fun these past few months because we know our baby is fine and with someone who loves and will care for her. They also ease our concern by sending photo updates of our smiling Z.

Incorporate date nights or date days with the baby.

  • If you can't find childcare, don't let that stop you from having a date night or date day with your spouse. You can still have fun and connect with your partner, even with the baby in tow. I know it can be overwhelming to take the baby out, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Plan to make sure you have everything you need. Make reservations during a not-so-crowded time or bring date night to the home. Here are some date suggestions: go for a walk in the park, have a picnic in the backyard, or go to a restaurant with a kids' play area.

Here are more tips for making the most of your alone time with your spouse:

  • Make a plan. Decide what you want to do and when you will do it. This will help you make sure you follow through with your plans and make the most of your time.

  • Be present. Put away your phones and other distractions when spending time with your spouse. Focus on each other and enjoy each other's company.

  • Be flexible. Things don't always go according to plan, especially when you have a baby. If you have to change your plans, don't be afraid to do so. The most important thing is that you're spending time together.

Getting alone time with your spouse after having a baby can be challenging, but it's important to make an effort. By following these tips, you can find ways to reconnect with your partner and maintain a strong relationship.

Until Next time!
