How To Journal Your Prayers

I have been working on strengthening my prayer life since 2016. The one thing that I found to work for me to be consistent in prayer is writing my prayers out. I use ‘My Diary of Prayers,’ my new prayer journal, to pour my heart out to God daily.

In this blog post, we will dive into how to write out your prayers and guide you on how to make it an integral part of your daily life. Whether you're new to prayer or seeking to have a consistent prayer life, this blog will provide you with valuable insights, tips, and techniques to help you get started and stay committed.

Three steps to guide you through journaling your prayers.

1. Set the atmosphere for prayer.

It is important to posture yourself for prayer. What are you talking about, Ebony? Setting the atmosphere, setting the mood. I like to think I am having a breakfast, lunch, or dinner date with The Lord! Okay?! Okay!

How to set the atmosphere for prayer.

  • Choose a specific time to journal your prayers.

Try to pick a time when you are less likely to be disturbed. This moment should be quiet, peaceful, and intimate. I typically write my prayers out at night time. Writing my prayers out at night helps me hold myself accountable to pray before bed. However, I do not limit myself to writing them down at night. If saying my prayer out loud isn’t enough for me in the morning or at any point of the day, I grab my prayer journal and pour my heart on paper to God.

  • Choose a specific place to journal your prayers.

Choosing a specific place to pray eliminates distractions. It also gives you more freedom to worship and pray. I have a specific room in my home for quiet time with God. If you don’t have a spare room, create a space in your closet to make a prayer room. Think about it, Jesus often went up to the mountain to pray. The mountain was a quiet place where he could be alone. SOOOOO if Jesus needed a quiet place to pray, so do we!

  • Play your favorite worship song before journaling your prayers.

This opens your heart to surrender it all to God. It helps position your mind and heart for prayer. You can also play worship music in the background while you are journaling your prayers.

2. Follow a prayer outline.

I follow the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) as my guide to prayer. I learned to do this through Hope City’s sermons on prayer and their Pray First prayer guide.

There are several other prayer outlines you can follow. I believe this one is the easiest for me to follow. However, every prayer I pray might not always follow this outline. I pray how I see fit for that day. So, don’t feel pressured to journal your prayers like myself or others. Prayer looks different for all of us. Embrace your prayer style.

3. Meditate and reflect on scripture after praying.

When I read the bible, God starts to talk to me. I don’t hear an audible voice, but I remember his promises. During this time, I record anything God has spoken to me. This is your time to write out the promises of God. When we quiet the noise, he will speak to us. After I write my prayer out, I go into the YouVersion Bible App and search for a scripture that can settle my heart, comfort me, or clarify my prayer.

Scriptures To Meditate On

Rejoice always,  pray without ceasing,  in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray. Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land.
Mark 6:45-47

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matthew 7:7-8

Here’s an example of how I use the journal pages in My Diary of Prayers to reflect and write God’s promises.

Summary of my prayer: Asking God to remove the spirit of worry from me in my prayers.

Scripture: Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life -Matthew 6:27

Reflections:

  • Worry is a waste of time.

  • Worry robs me of joy.

  • Why am I worrying about what God is in control of? Trust Him

Once I pray, I do my best to leave it in God’s hands and obey him. I suggest rereading your prayer often, so you can remember what you surrendered to God.

In ‘My Diary of Prayers,’ I specifically broke the sections by every 21 pages to encourage you to revisit those prayers regularly.
